Not Impressed: Earlier this week I finished “French Milk” by Lucy Knisley. What sounded like such a charming and promising read (a graphic novel about six weeks in Paris with the author and her mother) turned out to be a dull and irritating diary of what the author ate and purchased on her trip. Le Sigh. Even a Paris-loving maniac like me has their limits.

Wildlife Photography Exposure

Exposure is basically the length of time that a camera’s shutter must be open to allow sufficient light to enter the camera and reach the film plane or digital sensor. This is determined by a direct relationship with the size of the aperture and the ISO set at the time of exposure.

The smaller the aperture (the higher the number such as F16, F22 etc.), the less light that can reach the film plane or sensor, and so in order to have a correct exposure, the shutter must remain open for a longer period than if the aperture is larger (a smaller number like F2.8 or F4). Likewise, when a higher ISO is selected, this means that the type of film used, or the function of the sensor, is allowing less light to be needed to enable correct exposures. These relationships between shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings are always directly related.

Landscape photography without good composition will never leave a permanent impression on people, and will usually imply the image was captured without too much effort or interest to detail. work of art is as much about what we leave out of an image, just as much as it is in what we include.

Good masterpiece will simplify a scene and force people to concentrate their gaze upon the major subject in that image, and not have their attention distracted by an annoying white sky, a person wearing a red shirt in the corner of the scene, or a bit of bright litter in the foreground. Essentially composition is all about how we as individuals “see” the world around us, and can zoom in and focus upon the most important aspects of the scene and see the essence of its beauty. It is how we put a frame around what we want our photos to show, and exclude the unimportant parts of that scene. Great landscape photographers have learnt the art of exclusion of irrelevant subject matter, and only include the part of the scene that caught their eye, and made them stop to capture the image in the first place. It is the art of “seeing”, and not just merely looking.

Second Annual Photography Contest Begins

KIRKSVILLE -Representative Rebecca McClanahan is again co-sponsoring a photography contest for local residents.

McClanahan is joined by the Tourism Division of the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Kirksville Arts Association and Simpson Printing in sponsoring this year’s event.

The contest’s theme is “Seasons of Tourism,” and submissions by photographers of all skill levels are welcome.

A show of all entries will hang in the Arts Association’s gallery for public viewing from March 3-25. A reception and awards ceremony will take place March 6 at 6 p.m.

The top three photographers in each category, as decided by judges, will have prints of their photographs purchased to be hung in the Representative’s Capitol office. The Kirksville Tourism Division will also choose photographs for promotional use.

Entries must be submitted by March 1, and may be brought to any of the following drop-off spots in the district: Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce, 304 S. Franklin Street; Shop and Talk, 9 W. Hwy 6, Green City; Mind and Body Connection, 112 W. 2nd Street, Milan; and Putnam County Library, 115 S. 16th Street, Unionville.

I now know exactly what it takes to get a good wildlife photo, and I have also learned what to do to achieve what it takes… To take best wildlife photographs you may have to manage to get up early in the mornings and stay out late in the afternoons.

The main thing that makes a wildlife photograph excellent is the lighting. In the early mornings and late afternoons when the sun is low, the light is very warm and makes for excellent wildlife photography. You have to be in the field when this is going on… So, drop the excuses, get up earlier and go get that shot.
